An inclusive philosophy for student diversity

We at Uptown High School believe that every student has an entitlement to strive for excellence. Educational experiences are provided which develop pupils' achievement and recognise their individuality. Diversity is valued as a rich resource which supports the learning of all. In this school, inclusion recognises a student's right to a broad, balanced, relevant and challenging curriculum which is appropriate to his/her individual abilities, talents and personal qualities.

An inclusive school is an effective school. The expertise gained by schools in meeting the needs of students with additional needs will lead to practices that enhance teaching and learning for all and improve school performance. All staff and pupils will benefit from the development of inclusive practice.

At Uptown High School we are committed to providing a high quality educational experience for all students, regardless of ability, gender, religion, race, class or linguistic background.

We strive to

  • Ensure all young people need feel their achievements are valued and their views respected
  • Value a broad range of talents, abilities and achievement
  • Create a climate of high expectation
  • Promote success and self-esteem
  • Deliver to every student a high quality education which is appropriate for her or his individual needs.
  • Provide a continuum of provision matched to the needs of individual, whatever those needs
  • Identify and remove barriers to learning and participation
  • Promote understanding and appreciation of diversity
  • Make effective use of resources with the student at the centre.
  • Work in partnership with parents in supporting their child's education
  • Encourage students and adults to see learning as a life-long process, which continues beyond school.
  • Foster mutually sustaining relationships between schools and communities.

We recognise that inclusion in education is one aspect of inclusion in society.

We are committed to supporting students by addressing barriers to learning through:

  • identifying students' needs and addressing such needs
