Can Latin and Classical Greek be considered a language B?
The issue allowing a classical language to replace the requirements of a modern language in the MYP was brought to the attention of the MYP committee twice. On both occasions the committee unanimously rejected the idea of allowing Latin or Classical Greek to replace the study of a modern language. It is considered that, in the formative years of the MYP, the study of a modern language is a key element contributing to the two MYP fundamental concepts of intercultural awareness and communication.

This in no way prevents a school from offering Latin or Classical Greek to its students in addition to another language B, particularly as a preparation for further studies including classical languages. These extra non-MYP subjects can indeed contribute to the students’ deepening understanding of concepts, and mastery of skills. Schools cannot, however, ask the IB to validate the internal assessment of these subjects, and they must teach and assess them internally in addition to the MYP subjects featured in the various groups.
